This unusual painting of mine combines the elements of fantasy with my love of animals as the can embody human personalities of all varieties. If you have seen the movie Gorillas in the Mist you can relate to my experiences of having a 420 pound silverback gorilla come sit in front of you at a zoo, and intently watch you drawing him. Plus I have the experience of waking at 2am and hearing a slight noise on the floor only to discover that one of my prized African Cichlids leaped out of the tank, was still ALIVE ,and lived another several years back in the aquarium ! Years ago I met Andy Warhol and I think about his statement to the effect of everyone wearing the same colors. In schools they sometime wear uniforms so why can't people have blue faces ? Or green ,etc ? Many native cultures believe in spirit animals and I am trying to give you a bit of insight into my mindset regarding the inspirations behind my works such as this. This large work went through so many months and changes as it seemed like every night I would go to sleep with a new set of challenges that were awaiting me the next day. And seriously some nights I had dreams of acrylic paint brushstrokes that told me how much of an inspired journey that I was on ! The semi hidden gator and the shades can represent something of the primitive and popular culture in a complex mixture of different universes. There are many subtle yet significant symbols here that you will never get tired of enjoying as I still find this work so very fascinating even though I created it only a few years ago. And please don't forget that besides the seriousness of the creation...fun and magic in art are awesome experiences too !
